Asteroid 4722, Agelaos, a Jupiter Trojan, was discovered on October 16, 1977 by C.J. van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld, and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. It has a period of 11 years, 334 days.
It was named for Agelaos, a shepherd who was ordered to kill Paris, son of Priam, as a baby by exposing him to the elements on Mount Ida, because it had been prophecied that he would bring about the ruin of Troy and would need to be killed. When Agelaos returned after nine days to find the baby, amazingly, still alive, he took him home, raised and educated him. Paris was still living with Agelaos when he was chosen to make the fateful Judgment of Paris.
Astrologically, asteroid Agelaos seems to be about doing one's duty as a human being without regard for the recipient's social status, character or usefulness to society; possibly, following what appears to be fate or the will of god .
The glyph for Agelaos is mine.
