Asteroid 9936, Al-Biruni, was discovered on August 8, 1986 by Eric W. Elst and Violeta Ivanova at Smolyan, Bulgaria. It has a period of 5 years, 144 days.
It was named for the Uzbekistani-born medieval Persian scholar Abū al-Rayhān Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Bīrūnī (973-1048), called the "father of geodesy" (the science of measurement and representation of the earth) and also noted for his descriptions of India and interpretation of its science.

Abu al-Rayhan al-Biruni
The meaning of Al-Biruni (which means "the outer district" in Persian) seems to be: leaving, or being thrown out; possibly, geodesy and Indology.
