Asteroid 474640, Alicanto, a Kuiper Belt object, was discovered November 6, 2004 by Andrew C. Becker at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory nearLa Serena, Coquimbo Region, Chile. It has a period of 6653 years, 95 days.
It was named for the Alicanto, a mythological flightless bird of the Atacama Desert of Chile whose wings shine at night with beautiful, metallic colors (gold or silver, depending on what it eats, or possibly copper-green) and its eyes emit strange lights. A miner who follows it can find rich mineral deposits or treasures, but if the Alicanto realizes that it's being followed, it will turn off the light of its wings and scuttle away in the darkness, and quite possibly lead its pursuer off a cliff.
