Asteroid 2339, Anacreon, was discovered on September 24, 1960-Sep-24 by the Palomar-Leiden Survey (PLS) at Palomar Mountain Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. The PLS was basically Tom Gehrels, who took 130 photographic plates with the 122-centimeter Schmidt camera at Palomar, and CJ van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld at Leiden University in the Netherlands, who analyzed the plates; numerous asteroids were discovered as a result. Anacreon has a period of 4 years, 7 days
It was named for the Greek lyric poet Anacreon (582 BCE-485 BCE), who was known for his hymns and drinking and love songs. The melody to "The Star Spangled Banner" came from a 1778 song called "The Anacreontic Song" (popularly known as "To Anacreon In Heaven") by Britons John Stafford Smith (music) and Ralph Tomlinson (lyrics), that was a tribute to Anacreon.

Anacreon Reading His Poems At Lesbia's House by Dutch-British painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema
The meaning of asteroid Anacreon seems to be informed by the poet's reputation: having a good time, something to celebrate.
