Babel'

Asteroid 5808, Babel', was discovered on August 27, 1987 by Lyudmila G. Karachkina at Nauchnyj, Ukraine. It has a period of 5 years, 73 days.

Despite the obvious associations the name conjures up, especially to those familiar with the Biblical legend of the Tower of Babel, asteroid Babel was named for Russian writer and dramatist Isaac Emmanilovich Babel (1896-1940), hailed as the "greatest writer of Russian Jewry," who was tortured and murdered under Stalin and whose works were suppressed until after Stalin's death.
