It was named for Brazil (Brasil in Portuguese, the language of Brazil).
The capital of Brazil, a planned city carved out of undeveloped land in the central part of the country especially to serve as the national capital, is also called Brasilia. It was not meant to have slums, as other Brazilian cities do, but acquired them nevertheless. Generally, Brazil is struggling to control the exploitation and destruction of its environment, particularly the Amazon Basin with its rivers and rain forest.
