Asteroid 623 Chimaera, was discovered on January 22, 1907 by Karl Wilhelm Lohnert at Heidelberg, Germany. It has a period of 3 years, 315 days and is 44.09 kilometers in diameter.
It was named for a mountain in southwestern Turkey, believed to be Mount Yanartas near Cirali, Antalya province, where numerous fires burn from vents in the rock and which was said to be the home of the monster known as Chimaera that was part dragon, part lion and part goat and which was killed by the hero Bellerophon. Chimera nowadays means something that exists only in the mind, an unrealizable dream, or something like a life form, organ or fantastic creature composed of genetically disparate parts.
