It was named for a fictional character, Joshua Cole, the protagonist of the 1923 novel Cole of Spyglass Mountain by American author Arthur Preston Hankins (1880-1932). Cole studied astronomy while living in an Dickensian sort of reform school where the inmates went by numbers rather than names (Joshua Cole's number was 5635). He survived many crises, including being shot and nearly killed in his observatory at the momebnt he discovered life on Mars.
