Desiderata

Asteroid 344, Desiderata, was discovered on November 15, 1892 by Auguste Charlois at Nice, France. It has a period of 4 years, 66 days and is slightly more than 98½ miles in diameter.

Desiderata was likely named after Désirée Clary (1777-1860), a former fiancée of Napoleon I who eventually became the wife of General Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763-1844), the future King Charles XIV John of Sweden (reigning from 1818 to 1844) and the founder of the present Swedish royal house.

Desiderata is Latin for "desirable things."

Astrologically, asteroid Desiderata seems to get its meaning from that: desirable, what one desires.

Marilyn Monroe had Desiderata in the tenth house of career and reputation, sextile Varuna (big), square Jupiter (prosperity) and Ceres (nurturance), quincunx Pholus (need to show respect or to stand up to power), and opposite Hidalgo (ambition). She spent much of her adult life searching for the emotional nurturance she never got as a child and she wanted more substantial film roles than she usually got.

Rudolph Valentino had Desiderata in the twelfth house, square Neptune (illusion, the ideal, film) and Cruithne (one's mark, a brand name), trine Phaethon (a phenomenon, out of control), quincunx Varuna and parallel Pallas.

East Timorese president Xanana Gusmao, who fought for years to get Indonesia out of his country and is now wrangling with Australia over oil rights, has Desiderata in the first house, conjunct Vesta (dedication), trine Venus (values), quincunx Mars (aggression, defense), and quindecile Chiron (the door-opener) and Juno (the disadvantaged, relating).

Mahatma Gandhi, who adapted Thoreau's ideas of civil disobedience and passive resistance to Hinduism in the struggle for Indian independence, had Desiderata sextile Hidalgo and Don Quixote (taking on the system), trine Varuna and quincunx Pholus.

Jawaharlal Nehru had Desiderata conjunct Asbolus (advice given but not necessarily taken), sextile Mars, and square Venus. He and Gandhi differed on the issue of India's economic development; Nehru's vision of Western-style industrialization prevailed over Gandhi's vision of cottage industry.

Martin Luther King, Jr. had Desiderata conjunct the South Node (past influences, to take in, to separate), semisquare the Midheaven, square Neptune (spirituality, idealism), trine Varuna, biquintile the Ascendant and opposite the North Node (to grow past something, to give out, to make connections).

Legacy-conscious former president Bill Clinton has Desiderata in the seventh house, conjunct Dioretsa (something foolish that sticks), square Pandora (making a splash, having an impact), trine Pluto (to transform) and Lilith (the marginalized), and opposite Venus and Ixion (bad karma, inventive, lust for life).

Henry Ford, who made the car something for everybody, had Desiderata trine Saturn (work, career, rewards and consequences), Hylonome (the voice of the masses) and Pholus (to infiltrate or permeate).

Bill Free, an advertising executive who created sexist but successful ads in the early 1970s involving female flight attendants for a now-defunct airline, had Desiderata conjunct Venus (female attractiveness), square Phaethon, and parallel Neptune (photography, scandal) and Pallas (in defense of civilized values).

Gloria Steinem has Desiderata in the fifth house of love and self-expression, conjunct Heracles (to strive with), Hylonome and Varuna, semisextile Phaethon, square Juno (relating, marriage) and trine the Moon (women). She has attempted throughout her adult life to impart to the masses her vision of marriage as an equal partnership that debases and disempowers neither partner.

Sam Walton (born March 29, 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma), founder of the Wal-Mart discount-store chain, had Desiderata trine Mars (energy), quincunx Pallas (conceptualization) and parallel Jupiter (prosperity, philosophy). Despite the criticism that has been leveled at him and Wal-Mart, there's no question that his stores market goods that lots of people want to buy.

The glyph for Desiderata is mine.
