Asteroid 2307 Garuda was discovered on April 18, 1957, at La Plata, Argentina; La Plata Observatory gets the credit for Garuda's discovery. It has a period of 5 years, 113 days and is about 30 3/4 miles in diameter. It was named for a Hindu personification of spiritual truth, Garuda, son of Vinata and the sage Kasyapa, often portrayed as a shining bird.

Jonathan Dunn has linked this asteroid to plane crashes. I would agree, and extend this to the general concept of crashing and burning and possibly Far Eastern religions as well.

Actor and comedian John Belushi, whose orgy of drug abuse and out-of-control behavior ended in a fatal overdose, had Garuda in the fourth house, on the IC, conjunct Chaos, semisextile Achilles (blinded by passion), and square the Moon (the public) and 2002 AW197 (widespread conditions) as well as opposite the Midheaven.

Richard Nixon, whose presidency ended in resignation and deep disgrace, had Garuda in the ninth house of the law, sextile/trine the Nodal axis (connections, the past brought forward into the future), square Chiron (self-wounding) and sesquiquadrate Juno (giving away one's power).

Nicole Gonzales, an 11-year-old Muldrow, Oklahoma girl who attempted to take over the driving of her father's semi when he suffered a heart attack and crashed it in Texas, killing him, herself, and her younger brother, had Garuda square Uranus (liberation, too much freedom), trine Ceres (family) and 2000 EC98 (ungrounded), and quincunx Jupiter (long-distance travel, philosophy), Thersander (getting what one was looking for), and Thersites (saying no).

Fifties rock singer Jerry Lee Lewis, whose career never recovered from his marriage to his 13-year-old cousin Myra, has Garuda in the eighth house of legacies, sex and relationship, sextile Pluto (self-destruction) and 1999 CZ118 (making a crucial choice), trine Thersites (railed against) and quincunx Nessus (crossing a line).

Mackenzie Phillips, who struggled for many years to free herself from the addiction that drove her out of Hollywood, has Garuda sextile 2000 TX300, square Saturn and 2002 AW197 (widespread changes), trine 1999 OX3 (practical knowledge, cutting off something) and Jupiter (prosperity), sesquiquadrate Uranus (breaking loose, too much freedom), quincunx Pluto (self-damaging) and opposite Antenor (seen as otiose).

As for Far Eastern religions:

Mahatma Gandhi, who based his activism in part on his Hindu religion, had Garuda at 14 Taurus semisquare Pallas (politics), tredecile Juno (the disenfranchised), quincunx Vesta (dedication) and parallel Uranus (activism).

Parahansa Yogananda had Garuda at 28 Virgo trine the Midheaven (reputation, career) and sesquiquadrate Vesta.

The current Dalai Lama, whose reign has been marked by resistance to Chinese rule of Tibet from exile, has Garuda semisquare Mars (to assert) and quincunx Uranus.

The notorious Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh had Garuda in the eighth house, semisquare Pallas, trine Neptune (delusion, illusion, deception, poisoning, treachery) and quindecile Juno (to give away one's power). His cult's followers attempted to engineer a takeover of the government of Wasco County, Oregon, in which their community at Antelope was located, by deliberately contaminating the salad bars at the local restaurants with salmonella just before a county election. He was deported amid allegations of immigration fraud and sham marriages to his native India, where he later died of a heart attack.

Kurt Cobain, a convert to Buddhism, had Garuda septile Ceres (to nurture), sesquiquadrate Saturn (work), and contraparallel Juno.

George Harrison, a convert to the Hare Krishnas following a trip to India who helped popularize Hinduism, Buddhism and other Asian religions in the West, had Garuda semisquare Ceres, square the Vertex (significant relationships), trine the Moon (the public), sesquiquadrate Jupiter (prosperity, expansion, philosophy), square Uranus, and triseptile Pluto (unforgettable, power, transformation).

The glyph for Garuda is mine.
