Asteroid 8974, Gregaria, was discovered on September 25, 1973 by CJ van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld on plates taken by Tom Gehrels at Palomar Mountain Observatory, as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey. It has a period of 3 years, 99 days and is 1 2/3 miles in diameter.

It was named for the bird commonly known as the sociable plover (Vanellus gregarius; an older scientific name was Chettusia gregaria), also known as the sociable lapwing.
