Asteroid 18243, Gunn, was discovered on September 29, 1973 at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California by C.J. Van Houten, Ingrid Van Houten-Groeneveld, and Tom Gehrels. Gunn has a period of 3 years, 131 days.

It was named for astrophysicist James E. Gunn (born 1938), of Princeton University.
