Asteroid 69, Hesperia, was discovered on April 29, 1869 by Giovanni Schiaparelli at Milan, Italy. It has a period of 5 years, 49 days and is slightly less than 86 miles in diameter.

It was named for Schiaparelli's homeland of Italy; Hesperia is an ancient Greek name for Italy.

Astrologically, asteroid Hesperia seems to signify to bring to an end, "ride off into the sunset," "sink slowly in the west."
