It was named for the title character of the 1840 play Judith by German dramatist Friedrich Hebbel, which is based on the Hebrew legend of Judith, who decapitated the Babylonian general Holofernes, who laid siege to Jerusalem, after getting him drunk. Hebbel turned this story into a tragedy of nonconforming woman crushed by society.
