Kursk

Asteroid 3073, Kursk, was discovered on September 24, 1979 by Nikolai S. Chernykh, at Nauchnyj, Ukraine. It has a period of 3 years, 131 days.

It was named for the Russian city of Kursk, site of a pivotal battle of World War II between the Soviet and Nazi German armies which was the largest tank battle in history.

A Russian Navy submarine named for the city suffered a catastrophic explosion and fire on August 12, 2000 in the Barents Sea between Norway and Russia that sunk the submarine and killed all 118 people on board.
