Asteroid 2342, Lebedev, was discovered on October 22, 1968 by Tamara M. Smirnova at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchny, Ukraine. It has a period of 5 years, 192 days and is slightly less than 13 2/3 miles in diameter.
It was named for Nikolai Lebedev (1914-1942), a Soviet Army tank officer who died in the Battle of Stalingrad and received the award of Hero of the Soviet Union.
The meaning of asteroid Lebedev seems to be: last-ditch efforts (Damien Foor); "as it all fell apart, no one paid much attention."
