Le Gentil


Asteroid 12718, Le Gentil, was discovered on June 6, 1991 by Eric W. Elst at the European Southern Observatory near Pedernales, Coquimbo, Chile. Le Gentil has a period of 3 years, 154 days.

It was named for Guillaume-Joseph Le Gentil (1725-1792), a French astronomer who discovered several deep-sky objects and embarked on two ill-fated voyages to India in 1761 and 1769 in an attempt to observe transits of Venus across the solar disk.
