Asteroid 35, Leukothea, was discovered on April 19, 1855 by Robert Luther at Düsseldorf, Germany. It has a period of 5 years, 62 days and is slightly less than 77 miles in diameter.

Leukothea (in Greek, "the white goddess") was named for a daughter of Cadmus and Hermione who was originally called Ino. She the wife of Athamas, King of Thebes. and was changed to a sea deity along with her son Melicertes when she jumped into the ocean with him to escape Athamas, who had just killed her other son Learchus in a fit of madness. Melicertes became Palaemon, god of ports and harbors.

Leukothea was named by George Rümker and C. A. F. Peters for the "Beschützerin der Seefahrer" (German = Defender of the Sailors). Leukothea (and Palaemon) aided mariners in distress.


Astrologically, Leukothea seems to indicateto flee or escape, letting go, charity, nurturing, bad situations, disturbed behavior, having to give up something to get something.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Catholic priest sent to Auschwitz for his Polish Resistance activities, eventually gave up his life to save another prisoner; he had Leukothea quincunx Saturn (work, career, discipline) and opposite Don Quixote (taking on the system).

British writer Salman Rushdie, who has lived for many years with a price on his head from the Iranian government thanks to the late Ayatollah Khomeini for his novel The Satanic Verses, has Leukothea in the third house of the media and writings, conjunct Sun, Moon (the public) and Varuna (grown big, inflated, fundamentalism).

Author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, another Soviet-era dissident who also criticized what he saw as the excesses of American culture, has Leukothea semisquare the Sun, opposite Vesta (dedication), parallel Venus (values) and contraparallel Jupiter (foreign travel, philosophy).

Rudolf Nureyev, a Russian dancer who defected from the Soviet Union, had Leukothea in the third house, square the Ascendant (personal interests), trine the East Point (as the world sees you), quincunx Uranus (rebellion) and Heracles (to contend with), quindecile the Sun and opposite Hylonome.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, another Russian dancer who defected from the Soviet Union and has acted and been a choreographer as well as danced, has Leukothea conjunct Pluto (reinventing oneself), sextile Neptune (dance, the movies) and Ixion (lust for life), and quincunx Pallas.

Martina Navratilova, who defected from communist Czechoslovakia and has since come out as gay, has Leukothea in the first house of personal interests, square Uranus and Chiron (the maverick), trine the Midheaven, sesquiquadrate Jupiter, and contraparallel the North Node (giving out, connections made, transcending past influences).

Vaclav Havel, who was a dissident activist against the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and later became president of a free Czech Republic, has Leukothea in the fifth house of creativity, conjunct the South Node, sextile Nessus (freeing oneself of psychological toxins, predatory) and Don Quixote, quintile Juno (the dispossessed) and opposite the North Node. Elizabeth Smart, who cooperated with the deranged homeless couple who kidnapped her from her Salt Lake City home at age 14, until she was rescued, and later testified against them, has Leukothea in the third house of the media, semisextile Pholus, sextile Chiron (need to practice ingenuity or adaptability, need to pay attention) and opposite Mercury (the media).
