Asteroid 2546, Libitina, was discovered March 23, 1950 by EL Johnson at Johannesburg. It has a period of 4 years, 71 days and is slightly less than 9 miles in diameter.
It was named for the Roman goddess of funerals and burial of the dead. Her name was used to mean death in ancient Rome. An association of funeral directors met at one of her shrines and her temple collected a "death tax" instituted by Servius Tullius, one of the ancient kings of Rome, which was intended to pay the deceased's funeral expenses.
Libitina
Henk Middelraad says that asteroid Libitina signifies death, or the end of a matter; it may also signify funerals, funeral directors, funeral expenses, death records..
