Asteroid 429, Lotis, was discovered on November 23, 1897 by Auguste Charlois at Nice, France. It has a period of 4 years, 78 days and is 69.62 kilometers (43 1/4 miles) in diameter.
It was named for Lotis, a daughter of Poseidon who was changed into a lotus after praying to the gods to help her escape from the lustful god Priapus.
The meaning of Lotis seems to be: "a hard-on," hard on somebody, to chafe under, stain (Damien Foor); cause and effect, possibly, lotus plants, "lotus-eaters."
