Asteroid 3063, Makhaon, a Jupiter Trojan, was discovered on August 4, 1983 by Lyudmila G. Karachkina in Nauchnyj, Ukraine. It has a period of 11 years, 301 days and is about 86 1/2 miles in diameter.
It was named after the Greek hero Makhaon, who fought during the Trojan War. Machaon was a son of Asclepius. With Podalirius, his brother, he led an army from Thessaly (or possibly Messenia) to the Trojan War. Along with Podalirius, Makhaon was highly valued by the Greeks for his medical skill; at one point he healed Philoctetes, who had been abandoned on a desert island by his comrades due to a non-healing wound and their haste to get to the war and eventually persuaded (with some difficulty) to rejoin the war when his skill was needed. Makhaon was eventually killed in combat and was buried in Gerenia in Messenia, where the people venerated him.
Raymond Andrews has linked asteroid Makhaon to healing and medicine.
The glyph for Makhaon is mine and is derived from the hospital symbol.
