MANIAC

Asteroid 228029, MANIAC, was discovered on April 2, 2008 by Juan Lacruz at La Caņada Observatory in La Caņada, Avila, Spain. It has a period of 3 years, 318 days.

It was named for an early computer called MANIAC (Mathematical Analyzer, Numerical Integrator [or Numerator, Integrator], and Computer). Built at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico by Nicholas Metropolis, it ran successfully beginning in March 1952 and was shut down in July 1958, when it was succeeded by MANIAC II. Metropolis chose the acronym MANIAC deliberately (possibly at the suggestion of John von Neumann, developer of the computer's architecture) because he was annoyed by the practice at the time of giving computers acronymic names which he found silly. and hoped to shut that down.

The meaning of asteroid MANIAC, according to Henk Middelraad, is: insane or idiotic.
