It was named after Valeria Messalina (c. 25-48), the third wife of the Roman emperor Claudius (10 BCE-54). Messalina was the great-granddaughter of Marcus Antonius, better known as Mark Antony, who defeated Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius, the leaders of the conspiracy against Julius Caesar, and later fell into a fatal-attraction relationship with Cleopatra (Cleopatra VII), last of the Pharaohs of Egypt.
