Nielsen

Asteroid 9744, Nielsen, was discovered on May 9, 1988 by Carolyn S. Shoemaker and Eugene M. Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. Nielsen has a period of 4 years, 83 days.

It was named for American doctor Jerri Nielsen (born 1952), who, after discovering while working in Antarctica that she had breast cancer, treated herself with the help of aviators who flew in cancer drugs and other supplies in the dead of the Antarctic winter while also treating the people it was her job to treat in a 1999 tale of heroism that made international headlines.

One of the leading agencies that rate viewership of TV shows aired in America is A.J. Nielsen & Co. TV programs and careers in television rise and fall, live and die, by the ratings this company and others provide.

Astrologically, asteroid Nielsen seems to indicate self-reliance, or acting according to what pleases others..

TV producer Aaron Spelling, who tends to combine tough issues and moral lessons with glitz and entertainment, has Nielsen in the tenth house, conjunct Chariklo (to glamorize, need to keep perspective), semisquare the Moon (the public), sextile the East Point (as the world sees you), square Chaos (groundbreaking), sesquiquadrate Saturn (work, career, rewards), quindecile Jupiter (success) and opposite Asbolus (advice given but not necessarily taken).

McDonald's founder Ray Kroc (born October 5, 1902, in Oak Park, Illinois) had Nielsen semisextile Pholus (soaking in), decile Pluto (mass-produced), square Juno (relating) and the Nodes (giving out and taking in, connections and separations made), trine Lilith (maligned), biquintile Uranus (innovative), quincunx Chariklo, and contraparallel Jupiter.

Madonna has Nielsen in the first house of personal appearance and interests, on the Ascendant, also conjunct the Moon and Ceres (family, nurturance) and parallel Hylonome (popular appeal).

Jerry Springer (born Gerald Norman Springer on February 13, 1944 in London), a former politician not quite cured of politics whose name is synonymous with trashy talk shows, has Nielsen conjunct Nessus (the unattractive, the sleazy), semisextile Uranus, Vesta (dedication), and Lilith (outcasts, marginalized), decile Mars (violence), semisquare Saturn, sextile Juno (giving away one's power), quintile the Sun, square Don Quixote (taking on the system) and the Nodes, and trine Hidalgo (to assert, to promote, to defend).

Bill Clinton has Nielsen in the second house, sextile Hidalgo (to promote, to assert) and quincunx Asbolus (advice given but not always taken, bad experiences).

George Bush has Nielsen in the eleventh house of politics, sextile Mercury, trine Lilith, sesquiquadrate Jupiter, and quincunx Chaos (entropy). He never used polls and squandered enormous popularity at the end of the First Persian Gulf War, becoming a one-term president.

His son George W. Bush has Nielsen in the fourth house, tredecile Saturn, trine the Sun (to shine, to lead, chief executive) and Damocles (pushing the envelope, danger, crisis, groupthink, drastic change), biquintile Uranus, quincunx Talos (throwing stones, defense) and Dioretsa (foolishness, veering off course), parallel Varuna (grown huge, judgmental, fundamentalist), and contraparallel Juno.

California abduction victim Midsi Sanchez (born August 3, 1991) has Nielsen conjunct the South Node, semisquare Mercury, septile Mars, sextile Asbolus, quintile Pallas, square Pandora (making a splash, having an impact), opposite Juno and the North Node, and contraparallel Saturn. Abducted from her bus stop in Vallejo, California by child molester Curtis Anderson and handcuffed to the gearshift of his van, the third-grader waited until Anderson went to use the bathroom, leaving the keys behind, and then unlocked the handcuffs and sprinted to a nearby truck, whose driver used it to block Anderson's escape until the police arrived.

Utah abduction victim Elizabeth Smart, who let the experience of being abducted by two homeless religious fanatics, sexually assaulted and taken on a long road trip sort of flow over her and past her, has Nielsen in the seventh house, on the eighth cusp, semisextile Vesta, trine Neptune (illusion, deception) and opposite Damocles.

Pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart had Nielsen in the first house, cusping the second, conjunct Pholus (courage before power), semisextile Pallas and the Ascendant (personal interests), sextile the Sun, trine Chaos, Chariklo and Lilith (feminism), parallel Juno (marriage, claiming one's power), and contraparallel Cruithne (a brand name).

Aron Ralston (born October 27, 1975), a Colorado man who was forced to amputate his own arm below the elbow with a pocketknife when it became pinned underneath a boulder while he was hiking alone in a remote canyon (against his own better judgment) in eastern Utah, has Nielsen conjunct the Sun and Uranus (unique, remarkable, unconventional), decile Neptune (confusion, idealization), semisquare Venus (values), sextile Juno (power given away and reclaimed), square Saturn, trine Mars (knives, direct and simple action), Heracles and Nessus (unattractive), sesquiquadrate Vesta, quincunx Phaethon (out of control), and parallel Mercury (the media) and Ixion (inventive, creating karma).

Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton (born February 15, 1874, in Kilkea, Ireland), who made an epic journey back to civilization after abandoning his ship when it became icebound, had Nielsen sextile Uranus, square Chaos, trine Saturn, sesquiquadrate Venus, quincunx North Node, and contraparallel the Sun.

The glyph for Nielsen is mine.
