Asteroid 4587, Rees, was discovered September 30, 1973 by CJ van Houten and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Mountain Observatory. It has a period of 4 years, 121 days.

It was named for British astronomer Martin Rees (born 1942), Baron Rees of Ludlow, a former Astronomer Royal of Britain.
