Asteroid 22817, Shankar, was discovered on September 7, 1999 by the Lincoln Laboratory Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) Team at Socorro, New Mexico. It has a period of 4 years, 61 days.

It was named for Colorado Springs middle-school student Aarthi Shankar (born 1992), a finalist in the 2006 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC).
