It was named after Barbadian professional cricket player Sir Garfield St. Aubrun (Garry) Sobers (born 1936), considered one of the greatest cricketers of the mid-20th century; he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and declared a national hero by the Barbados government in 1998.

Sir Gary Sobers

The meaning of asteroid Sobers seems to be what its name might suggest: sober.
