Sooner

Asteroid 18876, Sooner, was discovered on December 2, 1999 by James M. Roe at Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. It has a period of 3 years, 273 days.

It was named for the discoverer's home state of Oklahoma and his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma. Oklahoma's nickname, the Sooner State, refers to whites who settled in Oklahoma, originally created as a giant Native American reservation, before its official opening to white settlement in 1889 ("Sooners"). The University of Oklahoma's nickname is the Sooner.

The meaning of asteroid Sooner seems to be informed by this term: impatience, expedience, being early or "sooner," jumping the gun, obstacles removed, a beginner; possibly, premature, or having to do with the state of Oklahoma.

The glyph for Sooner is mine.
