Asteroid 2867, Steins, was discovered on November 4, 1969 by Nikolai Chernykh at Nauchnyj, Ukraine. It has a period of 3 years, 303 days. The European Space Agency's Rosetta space probe visited it and imaged it in 2008.

It was named for Karlis Steins (1911-1983), a Russian-born Latvian astronomer and science popularizer of the Soviet era.
