Tawaddud

Asteroid 12623, Tawaddud, was discovered on October 17, 1960 by the Palomar-Leiden Survey (C. J. van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels). It has a period of 3 years, 310 days.

It was named for a character from The Thousand And One Nights, Tawaddud, a slave girl from Baghdad whose knowledge of astronomy, medicine and theology was superior to the top scholars in the court of Caliph Harun al-Rashid.

The meaning of asteroid Tawaddud seems to be: "what is this?" (Henk Middelraad); possibly also: talent is where you find it, gifted and disadvantaged.
