Asteroid 8777, Torquata, was discovered October 16, 1977 by C. J. van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld on photographic plates taken by Tom Gehrels at Palomar Mountain Observatory. It has a period of 4 years, 209 days.

It was named for the bird known commonly as the African stonechat (Saxicola torquatus).
