To Themis

by

Mark Andrew Holmes

Hail, Themis, bringer of divine law and order.

You were the first instructor of humanity

In the rules of conduct first estabished by the gods--

The laws of good governance, hospitality,

Conduct of assembly, and the proper worship of the gods;

You sit at the right hand of Zeus, giving him counsel;

Yours is the voice of prophecy, of the ancient oracles;

Yours is the changing seasons and the hand of Fate;

The wicked never elude your justice, O Themis.
