Asteroid 50, Virginia, was discovered independently by James Ferguson on October 4, 1857 at Washington. Robert Luther also saw it at Dusseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany on October 19 of that year. Virginia has a period of 4 years, 113 days and is about 74 2/5 miles in diameter.

The asteroid is named either for the American state of Virginia or for a legendary 5th-century BCE Roman girl who was stabbed to death by her father, the centurion Virginius, to save her from the lust of the corrupt judge Appius Claudius Crassus. The incident precipitated a revolt which resulted in the fall of the regime of the decemvirs, of whom Appius Claudius was one. The story is told by Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales and by Thomas Babington Macaulay in his poem "Virginia," among other authors.

Virginia, which was one of the 13 British colonies along North America's Atlantic Coast which eventually broke free of Britain and formed the United States, was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England, possibly by Sir Walter Raleigh around 1584. Elizabeth I, one of Britain's great monarchs, was known as "The Virgin Queen" because she never married.
