Asteroid 2101, Adonis, an Apollo asteroid and one of the first near-Earth objects (NEOs) to be discovered, was discovered on February 12, 1936 by Eugene Delporte at Uccle, Belgium. It has a period of 2 years, 207 days (937 days) and is about 2/5 mile in diameter (6/10 of a kilometer).
It was named for a character from Greek mythology, Adonis, a young man beloved by both Aphrodite and Persephone, who was gored to death by a wild boar he was hunting. He is an archetype for young male beauty.
