Asteroid 4055, Magellan, an Amor asteroid, was discovered on February 24, 1985 by Eleanor "Glo" Helin at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. It has a period of 2 years, 167 days and is a little less than 2 miles in diameter.
It was named for Portuguese explorer Fernao de Magalhaes (1480?-1521), better known by the anglicization of his name, Ferdinand Magellan; the Spanish, for whom he worked, call him Fernando Magallanes. He was the first European to lead an expedition into the Pacific Ocean and the first to attempt a circumnavigation of the globe; one of his ship captains, Juan Del Cano, completed it. Magellan didn't get to; he was killed in a battle with hostile indigenous people in what is now the Philippines. The Straits of Magellan and Magallanes province in southern Chile are named after him; the Milky Way's companion galaxies Nubecula Major and Nubecula Minor are often called the Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud, respectively.
