McElroy


Asteroid 1853, McElroy, was discovered December 15, 1957 at the Goethe Link Observatory of Indiana University in Brooklyn, Indiana. It has a period of 5 years, 133 days and is slightly less than 15 miles in diameter.

It was named for biologist William David McElroy, distinguished biologist and biochemist, chairman of the biology department at Johns Hopkins University (1956-1969), later director of the National Science Foundation (1969-1972) and chancellor of the University of California at San Diego (1972-1980). When he was director of the National Science Foundation the US government decided to fund the Very Large Array radio astronomy observatory.
