The New Spirit

(translated by Mark Andrew Holmes)

In a notorious neighborhood of Joppa, some anonymous disciple of Jesus argued with courtesans.

"The Magdalene has fallen in love, rabbi," said one.

"His love is divine," replied the man.

"Divine?...I won't say that she loves his flaxen hair, his deep eyes, his royal blood, his dominion over the nations; and finally, his looks?"

"There's no doubt about it; but it is hopeless love, and this is divine love."
