Fierz

Asteroid 48782, Fierz, was discovered on September 20, 1997 by Lenka Saronova at Ondrejov Observatory in Ondrejov, Czech Republic. It has a period of 4 years, 197 days.

It was named for Swiss teacher Olga Fierz (1900-1990), who worked in Prague during the German occupation in World War II and helped save a number of Jewish children from the Nazis, and also fostered a number of children returning from the concentration and internment camps after the wart. She is listed by Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous Among The Nations.

Olga Fierz

The meaning of asteroid Fierz seems to be: fierce (Henk Middelraad); possibly, protecting children under difficult situations.
