Messerschmidt

Asteroid 16450, Messerschmidt, was discovered on September 26, 1989 by Eric W. Elst at the European Southern Observatory. It has a period of 5 years, 284 days.

It was named for the German naturalist Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685-1735), who was sent by Peter the Great on a expedition to Siberia, in which he performed a study of the local flora, fauna, geography and mineralogy. He is also known for being the first person to investigate systematically the reports about mammoths coming from Siberia.

Another man named Messerschmidt, German aircraft designer and manufacturer Wilhelm "Willy" Messerschmidt (1898-1978), is best known for producing the first jet fighter plane to be used in warfare, the Me 262; introduced by the Nazi-era Luftwaffe in 1944, it ultimately had no effect on World War II's outcome, but was very influential in postwar military and civilian aircraft design.

The meaning of asteroid Messerschmidt seems to be: destroyed, obliterated, going all out, everything coming at once; too little, too late; having to do with aviation, especially military aviation, or (possibly) about the flora, fauna and environment of Siberia or other arctic or subarctic regions.
